An estimate of the inflation factor and analysis sensitivity in the ensemble Kalman filter

چکیده
The ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) is a widely used ensemble-based assimilation method, which estimates the forecast error covariance matrix using a Monte Carlo approach that involves an ensemble of short-term forecasts. While the accuracy of the forecast error covariance matrix is crucial for achieving accurate forecasts, the estimate given by the EnKF needs to be improved using inflation techniques. Otherwise, the sampling covariance matrix of perturbed forecast states will underestimate the true forecast error covariance matrix because of the limited ensemble size and large model errors, which may eventually result in the divergence of the filter. In this study, the forecast error covariance inflation factor is estimated using a generalized cross-validation technique. The improved EnKF assimilation scheme is tested on the atmosphere-like Lorenz-96 model with spatially correlated observations, and is shown to reduce the analysis error and increase its sensitivity to the observations.

To perform any economic management of a petroleum reservoir in real time, a predictable and/or updateable model of reservoir along with uncertainty estimation ability is required. One relatively recent method is a sequential Monte Carlo implementation of the Kalman filter: the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF). The EnKF not only estimate uncertain parameters but also provide a recursive estimat...

Data assimilation in meteorology seeks to provide a current analysis of the state of the atmosphere to use as initial conditions in a weather forecast. This is achieved by using an estimate of a previous state of the system and merging that with observations of the true state of the system. Ensemble Kalman filtering is one method of data assimilation. Ensemble Kalman filters operate by using an...

The regional waters in Singapore Strait are characterized by complex hydrodynamic phenomena as a result of the combined effect of three large water bodies viz. the South China Sea, the Andaman Sea, and the Java Sea. This leads to anomalies in water levels and generates residual currents. Numerical hydrodynamic models are generally used for predicting water levels in the ocean and seas. But thei...

A necessary ingredient of an ensemble Kalman filter is covariance inflation [1], used to control filter divergence and compensate for model error. There is an ongoing search for inflation tunings that can be learned adaptively. Early in the development of Kalman filtering, Mehra [2] enabled adaptivity in the context of linear dynamics with white noise model errors by showing how to estimate the...

Abstract This study investigates the empirical validity of the variability hypothesis in Turkey for the period of February 2005-November 2015, by using cross-sectional relative price data and by focusing on the assumptions of linearity and stability. The linearity assumption between the two variables is ensured by estimating quadratic regression equation. The assumption of stability is secur...
